Frequently Asked Questions:

How much does a full diagnostic assessment cost?

The total cost is £450.

How long does an assessment take?

Approximately 3 hours, although this depends on the child. In some circumstances, where a child is expected to struggle with a long assessment, for example, an assessment may be split over 2 sessions on different days.

What does an assessment involve?

The assessment starts with an informal chat to break the ice and put the child at ease. The tests are then carried out, with movement breaks and time for snacks in between to maintain focus and motivation. Some assessments are more practical, while others require more reading and writing. Again, these are alternated to maintain focus.

Where does the assessment take place?

This can be discussed when booking the assessment. Carrying out the assessment at my home in Haywards Heath means that assessment materials can be laid out and ready to administer for a smoother process. However, some children perform better in a familiar environment such as at their home or school. â€‹

Can parents be present during the assessment?

Generally, no. Parents are welcome to remain on site but are not usually in the room while the assessment is taking place, as this can be distracting for a child. However, if a child becomes upset and will perform better with a parent present, this can be accommodated. The most important thing is that results are accurate, and this is more likely with a child who is settled and comfortable. â€‹

Can an assessment be carried out over more than 1 session?

Yes, I am happy to split the assessment over 2 sessions if, for example, your child struggles to maintain their attention or fatigues easily. This can be discussed when booking the assessment.

How much involvement is needed from the school?

Information about your child's performance at school is crucial, as the assessment involves building a full picture of the child, and is not based solely on the scores from my assessment. As teachers are highly pressured for time, the questionnaire is kept as brief and to the point as possible.

Can a diagnostic report be used to apply for funding?

Yes, if a diagnosis is made, the report may provide access to the Disabled Students' Allowance for higher education. It may also provide access to grants through the Access to Work scheme. A report may also be used as evidence in the EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) assessment process. â€‹

Can a diagnostic report get my child extra time in their exams?

Not exactly. While a report may provide evidence of the need for exam access arrangements, such as 25% extra time in exams, decisions on this are at the discretion of the school and are based on a pupil's normal way of working in class, for homework and in class tests. If a pupil's normal way of working warrants an application for access arrangements, the school can choose to use the scores from my assessment for this - I will offer to complete the relevant paperwork for this (known as the Form 8) prior to the assessment. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
